Clarity Press announces the release of
Domestic Causes of American Wars: Economic & Political Triggers by Ivan Eland, a timely exploration of how domestic political and economic forces have historically driven U.S. wars. This 400-page book challenges mainstream narratives, revealing how internal agendas shaped America’s military history and continue to influence global tensions.

Dr. Ivan Eland, a Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute, examines conflicts from the Quasi-War to the War on Terrorism, arguing that U.S. wars were often propelled by domestic pressures—political ambition, economic interests, and cultural biases—rather than external threats. The book’s analysis of Cold War policies and post-9/11 interventions in the Middle East provides a lens for understanding U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s defense against Russia and its support for Israel’s recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE |
|
|
- Ukraine/Russia Conflict: Eland critiques U.S. Cold War strategies that fueled tensions with Russia, noting NATO’s eastward expansion post-1991 as a driver of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The book’s discussion of domestic motives, like anti-communist rhetoric inflating public fear, mirrors U.S. support for Ukraine to counter Russia, often driven by political posturing and defense contractor interests.
-
Israel/Iran Tensions: The 2003 Iraq invasion, driven by neoconservative agendas and coordination with Israel, empowered Iran’s regional influence, setting the stage for Israel’s 2025 strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Eland’s analysis of 9/11 as a pretext for expansive wars, highlights how U.S. military aid emboldens Israel’s pursuit of regional dominance, as seen in its push to expand the Abraham Accords.
-
Media and Power: Eland exposes how domestic elites manipulate narratives to justify wars, resonating with today’s polarized coverage of contemporary conflicts, leading readers to question official accounts.

Expert opinion:
““Ivan Eland’s book is a must read for both students and practitioners of foreign policy. It provides a thorough historical analysis that demonstrates that in the vast majority of cases, the reasons for U.S. military action have less to do with actual threats to national security and are more for domestic political reasons — a reality the foreign policy and defense establishment refuses to acknowledge. Knowing this reality, Eland makes the compelling case that the United States can adopt a more sensible restrained foreign policy and less costly defense posture — to the benefit of national security and economic prosperity. That would be truly America first.”
CHARLES PEÑA, Non-Resident Fellow at Defense Priorities and former Director of Defense Policy Studies at the Cato Institute
